Democracy is considered one of the principles of HIA; people should have a right to give input on decisions that affect them. Participatory approaches to HIA can be used to enable greater involvement in decision making, though such approaches are infrequently used and even less commonly evaluated. Therefore greater understanding of the outcomes of participation within HIA is important for ensuring that the principle of democracy is achieved.

Dr Katie Hirono, past president of SOPHIA, will present the results of her doctoral research - a comparison of participation within HIA and a form of deliberative democracy (citizen’s juries). She will explain how the goals of the process sometimes matter more than the outcome, and the opportunities that exist for strengthening health equity through such approaches.

SOPHIA is an international association of individuals and organizations that provides leadership and promotes excellence in the field of HIA and HiAP. Learn more about SOPHIA here.
