This daylong in-person workshop, co-hosted by SOPHIA and the GW Sustainable Urban Planning Program, will help attendees understand the connections between planning practice and health equity as well as existing and emerging tools to improve community well-being and quality of life.

Attendees will learn about the unintended health consequences of planning decisions and programs, hear from practitioners who are working to assess and address them and learn about the tools being used in the field. The course will cover the use of Health Equity Impact Review, Health Impact Assessment and Cumulative Impact Assessment, as well as other tools to address structural and cultural racism and its resulting health effects.

The faculty consists of three urban planning professionals: Dr. Sandra Whitehead, a nationally-recognized expert in measuring and addressing health equity,  Jaime Fearer, Health Impact Policy and Practice Analyst at DC Health, and Samia Byrd, Deputy County Manager and Chief Race and Equity Officer for Arlington County, Virginia. Each will share their expertise and provide concrete examples, as well as hands-on practice using the tools.

AICP credits applied for.
